Our Background and Brief History

According to the American Census Bureau, though Elmhurst, Queens only occupies 2.2 square miles, this district has the highest and most diversed ethnic groups in the United States. From the period of 1996-1999 there were at least 30,000 legal immigrants (excluding the illegal aliens) coming from 123 countries around the Globe, settling down in Elmhurst and starting their American dreams here. Meanwhile, Chinese immigrants were about 45,000-50,000, half speaks Mandarin and half Cantonese. There have been about six Mandarin churches in Elmhurst, but no Cantonese church. Elmhurst Christian Gospel Church is most probably the first Cantonese church in the area.

Thank God for His guidance that He led Rev. and Mrs. Ng to start church planting in Elmhurst at the end of 1996. After six months’ preparation, we started our first worship services on Mother’s Day which was on May 11, 1997. We rented a store located at 90-20 Corona Ave. and the rent was $1650 per month. Since the property was sold at the end of 2002, we have to move. Rev. Ng prayed to God to grant us a place which is “bigger, better, and more suitable” for church use. God is faithful and gracious, after 15 months, every member has personally experienced God’s miracles. He prepares, He provides, and also does He preserve. We did the closing of our present church building on January 30, 2004 at the price of $600,000 and about another $100,000 for renovation. We started utilizing our church facilities on April 4, 2004.

The name of our church: “Elmhurst Christian Gospel Church”, we do pray and hope that by utilizing the power of the Gospel, the entire Elmhurst will be evangelized by all the Christians in our church.
